Indianapolis, August 17, 2009 - "You've gotta take the kid into consideration," said Godby Family of Home Service CEO Craig Todd as he dropped off a custom-painted child's wagon and more than $1,000 in gifts Monday at the Peyton Manning Children's Hospital at St.Vincent's.
Receiving
the toy-laden purple-and-gold wagon plus six flat-screen video screens was
St.Vincent Foundation executive director Sue Ann Gilroy. "You keep adding value to your
participation," Gilroy smiled in appreciation to the expanding philanthropy of Todd
and the Godby employees. "This
must be the Godby way."
Todd attended the Foundation Gala this spring (2009) and secured a Godby Corporate sponsorship for the six-year-old children's hospital, named in 2007 for Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. Todd quickly developed a deep appreciation for the pediatric work at the facility, and his enthusiasm has touched the entire Godby organization.
"We raised the money for all those toys just by passing the hat at the office one Friday afternoon," Todd said. A longtime central Indiana residential heating, air conditioning and mechanical contracting business, Godby has 75 employees at its headquarters along Gasoline Alley on the city's west side.
Painted like Godby's service trucks, the wagon's purple-and-gold checkered-flag paint scheme reflects both a heartfelt reminder of a young child's fight with cancer, and the high-horsepower spirit of Godby's location and employees.
The child's name was Tim, and he was the son of a Godby employee. "Timbo's" valiant fight with cancer captured the hearts of the entire Godby organization, and when he lost that fight in 2006, Godby repainted all of its trucks purple in honor of Timbo's courage and spirit.
Quietly assessing the child-friendly surroundings and treatment protocols at Peyton Manning Children's Hospital, Godby CEO Todd said, "You've gotta take the kid into consideration when you are treating a serious disease."
"This is so hard, to be as sick as these kids are," Todd continued. "It's hard on them and hard on their families. We saw it with Timbo, and it's an honor for all of us in our company to be able to present this wagon and these gifts to brighten a sick child's day."
Godby Family of Home Services joins the PMCH "Wagon Club" wall of fame, with what Todd hopes will be a trend-setting visual package. "We'd challenge any other company out there, and welcome them happily, to see what kind of child's wagon they can deliver to St.Vincent."
Instead of wheelchairs and gurneys, the IV-equipped wagons are used whenever possible to transport the children around the hospital. See www. gottabegodby.com.
